Lanterns ignite with a flicker and flare, Painting the night with colors rare. The air is sugared, spun with delight, Popcorn and candied apples in sight. Smoke from the grills, a cinnamon breeze, The perfume of wonder drifts through the trees. Laughter rolls where the midway bends, Each corner a secret the twilight defends. The Ferris wheel hums, the calliope sings, And time itself dances on painted swings. Why do we love it, why do we stay? Because the carnival steals the gray. In every light, in every sound, A piece of lost childhood is suddenly found. So let the gates open, let mystery start, The carnival waits in the dark of the heart.
