Looking at the Church / Mirando a la Iglesia by Michelle Trunzo

Michelle created this painting of Havana Cathedral, also known as Catedral de San Cristobal, from memory, many years after she fled Cuba in 1957, never to return. This house of worship, which was completed in 1777 and is located in Old Havana, is Cuba’s most famous church. The remains of Christopher Columbus were interred here from 1796-1898, before being relocated to Europe. Constructed from blocks of coral, this is where Michelle prayed and sought guidance. Not immediately apparent in the lower middle portion of this painting due to its starkly diminutive size is a man wearing a hat, sitting on a bench, gazing at and seemingly contemplating the church. Michelle creó esta pintura de la Catedral de La Habana, también conocida como Catedral de San Cristóbal, de memoria, muchos años después de que huyó de Cuba en 1957, para nunca regresar. Esta casa de culto, que se completó en 1777 y se encuentra en La Habana Vieja, es la iglesia más famosa de Cuba.
